Every day, NHS managers take decisions that affect people’s lives. When services are changed or initiatives introduced the consequences for patients can be profound. Our capacity to make a difference, and improve health services and outcomes, is matched by a risk that we can do real harm if we get those decisions wrong.
Managers therefore have as much responsibility as doctors and nurses to ensure that decision-making is informed by the available evidence. No one wants to be treated by a clinician whose knowledge and practice is out of date, so why should anyone be content to work in an organisation where the board and senior managers are not well informed and equipped with the latest evidence on how to organise and manage services.
The solution sounds simple – managers and clinicians need to be provided with evidence to make informed decisions. However the difficulty in reality can be reaching and actually getting access to this research.
The National Institute of Health Research Delivery and Organisation Program (SDO) was set up in 2000 with the aim of providing this evidence and knowledge to managers and practitioners.
